Clinical Supervision Clinical Supervision for Counsellors
& qualified Psychotherapists I highly value the
development of a collaborative, collegial supervisory relationship, providing
high support while being direct and challenging (with humour and lightness). I
promote the adaption of our therapeutic practice to meet clients where they are.
Whether you are an
experienced therapist in private practice, trainee counsellor on placement or
providing therapy in organisation settings, developing your individual style
and professional authority (i.e. ‘owning the chair’) is an ongoing
developmental task I will support you with. I focus a lot in supervision on
your counter-transference/embodied experience of client relationships as a
source of understanding the dynamics of the work.
I work across modalities,
drawing upon theory and practices across the schools in ways that are pertinent
to your client’s presenting issues and your way of working. This includes
attachment, the impact of trauma, the Gestalt cycle of awareness (projections,
introjects, deflection etc), working with polarities and splitting,
positive-strength based psychology, embodied and relational working. I value a
humanistic, here-and-now therapeutic focus, that is ethically and research
informed.
If you are looking for a supervisor with particular client group or
presenting issue experience, a little bit of my professional history follows:
I am an approved external supervisor for trainees on the Diploma in
Gestalt Counselling (Gestalt Centre, London) I trained in the Inskipp and Proctor model of supervision (Diploma in
Integrative Supervision), focusing on the supervisee’s restorative, normative
and educational needs enabling supervision across different theoretical
orientations. From 1999 I spent 15 years working in the voluntary sector, managing
counselling services for ‘under-represented’ London communities, particularly
working with young people, adults with visual impairment/sight loss, and
alcohol and substance use counselling. I was committed to delivering accessible
counselling to clients from diverse cultural communities. I developed volunteer counsellor placement programmes for many of these
services, while also providing clinical supervision since 2003. I was a University mental health mentor and then Mental health advisor
from 2011-2020, so I bring experience of working with clients with
disabilities, long term health issues, neurodiversity and both chronic and
acute mental health difficulties. I have had a life-long interest in adolescent development, Queer and
gender identity. My private practice attracts an international, cross-cultural, and
‘intersectional’ client group. Learn more about our fees, location and availability.
Consultative
Supervision for Professionals
Mentors, helpline workers, advisors, support & substance use workers,
service co-ordinators, social care and charity professionals are increasingly
accessing and valuing the benefits that supervision can bring to their role and
professional development. If you work with a client group, then my adapted
supervision model and approach will increase your personal and professional
effectiveness.
I recommend
fortnightly supervision as a minimum frequency and appointments are 50 minutes
long. Both face to face and online supervision are available.
A
supervisor with an adaptable supervision frame will increase your effectiveness
and attend to: Processing your thoughts and feelings evoked
by your work/client group (anxiety, difficulties, 'not knowing', stuck-ness,
& antipathy); this helps to separate out what belongs to you
(personally), your client and dynamics of the working relationship. Separating out line management and
organisational dynamics from your client work. Increasing your self-confidence and skills to
work effectively, tapping into your strength, capability and experience. Providing a supportive space where you decide
on the focus and content of each supervision session and we work
collaboratively together. My professional
background as a service and senior manager for charities delivering
counselling, advice, outreach and client centred services enables me to utilise
my strategic and operational experience, to understand the challenges and
dynamics of your role.
Seeing an external
supervisor provides some distance from your work setting and an independent
space that aids clarity and insight, where the focus is purely on you and your
work. I provide both individual and group supervision, depending on your
organisation’s needs.
No understanding of
therapeutic concepts is required for you to work with me.
Whether you are an
individual or an organisation wanting to provide clinical support for your
staff, contact me to have a discussion about your particular needs. I can
invoice you as an individual or the paying organisation on your behalf, for
clinical supervision or consultative work. Learn More
